Consumer 3D Printing – Highlights from CES

Full-color paper 3D printing
3D printing - mcor

mcor technologies iris 3D printer

Mcor technologies does full-color 3D printing using standard copy paper as the medium.

First, it auto-feeds in a big stack of paper, and prints one layer at a time, one sheet at a time.  Then the paper is fed to a stage where it gets glued, pressed, and bonded to the sheet/stack below.  Third, a knife cuts the depth of the top sheet, in that layer’s shape for the 3D image.  It continues steps 2 and 3 until finished.

When it is finished, you have a solid block of bonded 8.5″ by 11″ paper, however tall the 3D image is.  It feels as hard as wood.  You break away the excess paper on the outside, and you get the full color solid model from inside.

3Doodler – Triplane

The 3Doodler is a hand-held pen that “prints” in 3D with colored plastic feed sticks.  Plastics available are PLA or ABS.  They expect to begin shipping product in March 2014 as soon as their Kickstarter orders are filled.

They sell direct from their website, but I think it will they will do well if they choose to sell at retail craft stores.

3D design

Some companies have come out with easier to use 3D creation software.  Leopoly.com, by Leonar3do, is one of these.  They’ve made a fun, gamelike 3D sculpting tool using 3D glasses and a 3D mouse.

There was much more.  These were the overall highlights.  Did I forget something?  Please comment below.
