Highlights from International CES show

Wireless speakers

Wireless speaker, purse-shaped

There were a wide variety of wireless speakers.  Many had nondescript shapes, but there were some interesting shapes and uses.  There was also a splash-resistant beer holder with built-in speakers by DUBGEAR – excellent quality speakers, as a matter of fact, given my discussion with the very knowledgeable design engineer, Jonathan Loudon, at the booth.

Televisions, monitors, and touch screens

Larger and higher definition televisions and monitors were a large portion of the show.  I seem to recall a 90″-diagonal TV.  4K appears to be the resolution for ultra high definition television, and there was also 8K and even 10K.  Curved screens are coming out as well.  And I saw one 3D television that could be viewed directly, without any special glasses.

Touch screens are getting larger too.  3M had several that were mounted horizontally as tabletops.  One was set up at coffee table height.  Another was set at standing height, and had a touch-screen foosball game demonstration playing.

Cars and other vehicles

Auto makers from around the world brought their latest technologies and concept cars too.  There were many vehicles with new control systems, cameras, sound systems, power systems.  Very snazzy and with people lined up to get in to see first hand.

Driverless vehicles were on display too.  And there were 2-wheeled balancing-technology vehicles on display for testing, by some competitors of Segway.

3D Printing

I will save this for another blog post.

Lots of other stuff
  •  eye-tracking software – I’ve seen it for military applications; now it’s being introduced to the consumer market.
  • gaming devices and games
  • small micro-cameras for every outdoor and/or action purpose.  Some will track the subject – so if you want to capture video of yourself surfing, you set up the camera on a tripod on the beach, and it will track you on the water.
  • wireless home security systems
  • smart watches: typically act as convenient access to your phone
  • other wearable technology, such as health and fitness sensors
  • headphones and ear buds
  • e-cigarettes ( I was amazed at how many exhibits there were for these), phone and tablet cases, and a few consumer appliances, lighting products, beds, massage chairs, and other varied items sprinkled around the show.

One last observation I had: I was surprised at the number of small companies exhibiting that said they had received funding through Kickstarter or were about to launch a Kickstarter campaign.
